Tips and "petty" cash

Apparetnly, I tip too much.

I just submitted a petty cash form to be reimbursed for a cab ride I took home after working till 2:30am at the Prada store in Soho monday night.

The ride was $11.80, and I figured the guy was pretty nice, coherent, english-speaking, etc., so when I got out of the cab, I rounded up to $15 and was on my way.

I was questioned about this obscenely large tip, and I submitted to the fact that yes, the tip probably was a little more that necessary, at about 27%. So I agreed to knocking $2 off the expense form, simply to avoid an annoying meeting with the head of accounting about taking advantage of petty cash, and to prevent my future expense forms from being overly scutinized and constantly questioned.

The thing is, I know how much they bill me out for, and it's far greater than what they pay me. I certainly don't feel bad, and I know that I am not taking advantage. They will still profit handsomely from my work.

And also, at the end of an 18 hour day, would you be breaking your head over the extra $2 in the tip though? I didn't.

I guess that's the "petty" part of of petty cash though.

But they are asking me if it was my own money, would I still tip that much? and I think the answer is YES, i would.

Pete has suggested that I sometimes tip too much though, so maybe there's something to this. But ultimately, I think that people who work for tips deserve a little generousity now and again. and in the grand scheme of things, the occasional extra $2 or $3 is not going to make a dent in my finances. Besides, It's not like a cab is like a fancy hotel, where you have to tip pretty much everyone you see at least 5 or 10 dollars.

what do you guys think? do I tip too much? how much is is enough for satisfactory service in a cab? or at a resturant, or bar? or for the food delivery guy? the doorman of your building? (if you have one... though I bet nobody reading this does. I know someone who used to be one though, and around christmas time, they definitley make out like theives!)

They are playing a free show at Pianos tonight in about an hour and a half from now.
